Breaking the Doom Scroll Habit
It’s so easy to grab my phone and start scrolling right when I wake up. Too often, I find myself going to click on social media before even getting out of bed. And for what? Certainly not anything that truly fills me up. Instead, I walk away annoyed, disturbed, or just utterly empty.
A New Morning Habit
Recently, I’ve been making a conscious effort to open my Bible app—or even better, my physical Bible—to start the day in God’s Word. I read through a few verses or listen to a chapter or two before diving into my daily tasks. This simple change breaks the doom scroll habit and helps me start the day feeling productive.
If I’m listening to scripture, I’ll make my coffee alongside it. I get Shawn’s lunch ready for the day and start breakfast for the babies and big girls. I find myself something to eat, too. Then, I tackle a chore or two. Keeping busy honors God by stewarding my home well. The great thing about this routine is that it generally keeps me off my phone.
The Struggle is Real
But don’t get me wrong. I fail sometimes, too. There are days when I start the day with that bad habit, and sometimes it turns into a week of scrolling. But, man, I FEEL it. My soul starts feeling heavy. I sense the weight of the world, and my spirit misses the peace that surpasses all understanding. The world is dark, and social media loves to feed division, conspiracy, and doom. However, the Bible offers such hope and promises that can never be broken.
Finding Hope in Scripture
So, if you woke up today and started scrolling without reading your Bible yet, it’s not too late. Open the Bible app or, better yet, your real Bible. Read some scripture and fill your soul with God’s goodness instead of the world’s doom.
