“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
Proverbs 27:17 ESV
“Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.”
Titus 2:3-5 ESV
I never had many friends growing up, but looking back, I have always found friends in church. The girls I grew up with and spent time in my teenage years with taught me about friendships and Jesus. I distinctly remember a moment at camp where I friend was having an anxiety attack and I was able to pray with her and bring up scripture. I also remember the girls I grew up with praying with me and over me as we navigated our adolence.
When I grew up, got married, and moved away, I lacked those friendships and missed them dearly. When we finally found a church and got connected, I was invited to a women's bible study unlike any other I've ever experienced. In that group, these women pushed each other to grow deeper in our faith, to spend time digging into God's Word and not just passively read it, to understand God's purchase for us, and to fully embrace him in every aspect of our lives. We prayed together, cried together, celebrated together, worshipped together.
When my family moved, I cried. I knew that this group could not be replicated in the same way, but I also had hope that God would not fail me and would bring me another group of women to push me in the same way!
After my initial plug in with the women's bible study, I was pushed into leadership of this group, which gave me the unique opportunity to recreate a semblance of the group I loved so much in our previous home. It's not the same, but the relationships built are beautiful all the same!
To say I am grateful for the women I know who push me to deepen my relationship with Christ, who push me to grow, and who pray with me and alongside me is an understatement. These women are such a huge blessing to my life and I’m grateful to walk alongside them each day!
If you do not have a group of women who do the same, take the big step to join a group, plug yourself into your church's Women's Ministry, or take a risk and start a group yourself. You won't regret it, and it will change the trajectory of your relationship with Christ!
